Department of Molecular Biology

About Department

Molecular biology is a field of biological science that explores the composition, structure, functional mechanisms, interactions, and regulations of the molecular basis, which are essential to cellular physiology. In addition, molecular biology focuses on nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) and macromolecules (proteins), which are necessary for life processes, and investigates how these molecules interact and function within cells.

The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at KISSR is involved in research, education, and training to address fundamental life sciences issues and apply biological knowledge to prepare scientists and researchers to make a real difference in different topics such as molecular cell biology, molecular virology, and biotechnology.

Mission

The department's primary goal is to conduct research that enhances our understanding of the practical aspects of molecular genetics. The department is dedicated to educating students and new graduates about the challenges in molecular life sciences, offering training in an inclusive and friendly atmosphere. We aim to provide a research environment encouraging and fostering research and education in molecular and cellular biology, genetics, and biomedical sciences.

Vision

The department's scientific vision is to establish itself as a pioneer in molecular biology and genetics and to facilitate the recruitment of academic staff to engage in research projects.

Molecular Biology Laboratory 2

Molecular Biology Laboratory 2

Molecular biology laboratories are categorised into various sections to minimise the risk of contamination; separating the facilities into specific rooms lowers the chances of contamination during PCR. Therefore, the Molecular Biology Laboratory 2 is designated for PCR research and diagnostic applications. This laboratory is dedicated to conducting special projects for the Kurdistan Institution for Strategic and Scientific Research (KISSR), universities, and other organisations, utilising precise and diverse techniques such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, and capillary electrophoresis. The laboratory is equipped with the instruments listed in the table below.
