Dr. Narmeen S. Ahmad, Dr. Ali T. Arif, and Shania B. Sadiq, who are lecturers and researchers at the Kurdistan Institution for Strategic Studies and Scientific Research, carried out this study with the assistance of several local and international researchers. The study is related to the effects of aflatoxin and ochratoxin on human health, entitled:
Carcinogenic Mycotoxins in Common Foods: ELISA-Based Measurement of Aflatoxins and Ochratoxins.

The study showed that some types of fungi produce toxins that affect human safety and health. Among these toxins, aflatoxin and ochratoxin cause cancer in humans, especially after prolonged exposure to these toxins through food.

This study aimed to collect data on aflatoxins and ochratoxins in 174 commonly consumed foods, including grains, spices, chips, vegetables, tea, and coffee. The amounts of aflatoxin and ochratoxin in the collected samples were measured and analyzed using the ELISA technique. The results showed that most samples were safe and within internationally permitted limits, except for 15 samples.

The findings of this study can be used to raise public awareness about the impact of fungal toxins on public health, in addition to reducing the economic losses via the proper use of dry products and protecting them from contamination with fungal toxins, especially during production, harvesting, and storage.
